1. Steering wheel; 2. Steering column assembly; 3. Bracket plate; 4. EPS control unit; 5. Intermediate shaft
Attention:
- When removing and installing, do not strike the steering column assembly in the axial direction.
- Care should be taken when turning the steering wheel repeatedly with the vehicle stopped, as the motor and control unit may overheat.
- Steering column assembly - heavy (approx. 10 kg). Be careful when removing it from the vehicle.
- The steering column assembly cannot be disassembled. If there are deviations from the norm, replace the steering column as a set.
Removing the steering column assembly
1. Remove the driver's airbag module.
2. Remove steering wheel and coiled wire.
3. Remove the column cover, instrument panel and lining. See chapter Body.
4. Remove the switch of a cleaner and washer of a windscreen and the switch of light of headlights and indexes of turn.
5. Remove all collars and disconnect all sockets from a steering column in gathering.
6. Turn out a fixing bolt of an intermediate shaft from the steering mechanism and separate a shaft from the steering mechanism.
7. Disconnect the connector from the electric power steering.
8. Remove the nut from the steering column assembly and check that the steering column moves freely.
9. Remove the steering column assembly from the vehicle.
Attention:
- Do not rotate the steering shaft 360°or more. (This is fraught with an error in the value of the angle of rotation, which is entered into the memory of the electric power steering).
- Do not separate the intermediate shaft and steering column.
Check after removing the steering column assembly
Check for damage or other abnormalities on the steering column assembly and intermediate shaft. Replace if necessary.
If the vehicle has been involved in a minor collision, measure the length «L», as it shown on the picture. If the length is out of specification, replace the steering column as an assembly.
Length «L» steering column: 464 mm
Measure the steering torque using a preload gauge. If the torque is out of specification, replace the steering column assembly.
Turning torque: 0-2.1 Nm (0-0.21 kg m)
Installing the steering column assembly
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following. Tighten bolts and nuts to the required torque.
Connect the worm shaft (3) with intermediate shaft yoke (1) and steering column (2) assembly [right hand drive (4); left hand drive (5)] and tighten the bolt to the required torque.
Attention:
- When tightening the bolts, first tighten them by hand and make sure that no binding is felt before final tightening.
- Insert the bolts in the required direction. (Do not insert them from the opposite side).
- Tighten the bolts from the joint side of the worm shaft and the intermediate shaft. Make sure there is no gap between the worm shaft and the yoke and between the worm shaft and the cam nut.
Checking after installing the steering column assembly
Turn the steering wheel and check for misalignment, binding, knocking or excessive force required to turn the steering wheel.
