Removal and installation
Removal
1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Remove the front exhaust pipe. See chapter «Accelerator, fuel system and exhaust system».
3. Unscrew the terminal nut «IN» (A) and disconnect the terminal wiring «IN».
4. Disconnect the connector «S» (IN).
5. Unscrew the starter mounting bolts (WITH).
6. Remove the starter from the vehicle towards the top.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
Attention. Tighten the terminal nut «IN» with caution.
Disassembly and assembly
Assembly
When assembling the starter, apply high temperature grease to the bearing, gears and friction surfaces.
Please strictly observe the following instructions:
Adjusting the Starter Gear Protrusion
Bias
- Compare offset «L» along the height of the starter gear when it is pressed out when the contacts of the electromagnetic switch are closed and when it is pressed out by hand until it touches the limiter.
Bias «L»: See paragraph below. «Technical data and specifications».
- If the offset is abnormal, adjust using the shim.
Examination
Checking the electromagnetic switch
- Before starting the test, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
- Disconnect the terminal «M» starter.
1. Continuity check [between terminal «S» (A) and switch body].
- If there is no continuity, replace the magnetic switch.
2. Continuity check [between terminals S» (A) And «M» (WITH)].
- If there is no continuity, replace the magnetic switch.
Checking the gear/clutch
1. Check the gear teeth.
- Replace the gear if the teeth are worn or damaged (Also check the condition of the ring gear teeth).
2. Check the gear teeth (if available).
- Replace the gearbox if the teeth are worn or damaged. (Also check the condition of the gear teeth on the rotor shaft).
3. Make sure the starter gear locks in one direction and rotates freely in the opposite direction.
- If it locks or rotates in both directions or if unusual resistance is felt, replace it.
Checking the brushes
- Check if the brushes are worn out.
Minimum brush length: See paragraph below. «Technical data and specifications».
- If the measured value is less than normal, replace the brushes.
Checking springs and brushes
- Check the brush spring pressure by separating the spring from the brush.
Spring pressure (with a new brush): See paragraph below. «Technical data and specifications».
- If the measured value is less than normal, replace the brush springs.
Checking the brush holder
1. Check the insulation between the brush holder (+) and its basis (-).
- If there is no continuity, replace the brush holder.
2. Check whether the brush moves freely.
- If the brush holder is bent, replace it; If the sliding surface is dirty, clean it.
Stator check
- The magnet is fixed to the stator using glue. Check if the magnet is holding on to the stator and if there are any cracks in it. Replace any defective components in the kit.
Attention. Do not clamp the stator in a vice or hit it with a hammer.
1. Conductivity test (between two adjacent segments).
- If there is no continuity, replace the rotor assembly.
2. Insulation check (between the commutator lamellas and the shaft).
- If there is continuity, replace the rotor assembly.
3. Check the surface of the switch.
- If the surface is rough, lightly sand it with sandpaper No. 500-600.
4. Check the diameter of the commutator.
Minimum switch diameter: See paragraph below. «Technical data and specifications».
- If the measured value is less than normal, replace the rotor assembly.
5. Check the depth of the insulating mica from the surface of the commutator.
- If it is less than 0.2 mm, trim to 0.5-0.8 mm.
