Removal and installation
Removal
1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Remove the air duct (inlet). See chapter «Mechanical part of the engine».
3. Disconnect the connector from the low oil pressure warning lamp switch.
4. Unscrew the terminal nut «IN» and disconnect the terminal wiring «IN».
5. Unscrew the terminal nut «S» and disconnect the terminal wiring «S».
6. Unscrew the starter mounting bolts.
7. Remove the starter from the vehicle towards the top.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
Attention. Tighten the terminal nut «IN» with caution.
Disassembly and assembly
Assembly
When assembling the starter, apply high temperature grease to the gear bearing and friction surfaces.
Please strictly observe the following instructions:
Adjusting the Starter Gear Protrusion
Gap
- When the starter gear is pulled back when the contacts of the electromagnetic switch are closed, push it back by hand, eliminate the play and measure the gap «WITH» between the leading edge of the gear and the gear stop.
Gap «L»: See paragraph below. «Technical data and specifications».
- If the gap is not normal, adjust using a shim.
Examination
Checking the electromagnetic switch
- Before starting the test, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
- Disconnect the terminal «M» starter.
1. Continuity check [between terminal «S» (A) and switch housing].
- If there is no continuity, replace the magnetic switch.
2. Conductivity check [between terminals «S» (A) And (WITH)].
- If there is no continuity, replace the magnetic switch.
Checking the gear/clutch
1. Check the gear teeth.
- Replace the gear if the teeth are worn or damaged. (Also check the condition of the ring gear teeth).
2. Check the gear teeth (if available).
- Replace the gearbox if the teeth are worn or damaged (Also check the condition of the gear teeth on the rotor shaft).
3. Make sure the starter gear locks in one direction and rotates freely in the opposite direction.
- If it locks or rotates in both directions or if unusual resistance is felt, replace it.
Checking the brushes
- Check if the brushes are worn out.
Minimum thread length: See paragraph below. «Technical data and specifications».
- If the measured value is less than normal, replace the brushes.
Checking brush springs
- Check the brush spring pressure by separating the spring from the brush.
Spring pressure (with a new brush): See paragraph below. «Technical data and specifications».
- If the measured value is less than normal, replace the brush springs.
Checking the brush holder
1. Check the insulation between the brush holder (+) and its basis (-).
- If there is no continuity, replace the brush holder.
2. Check if the brush moves freely.
- If the brush holder is bent, replace it. If the sliding surface is dirty, clean it.
Starter check
The magnet is fixed to the stator using glue. Check if the magnet is holding on to the stator and if there are any cracks in it. Replace any defective components in the kit.
Attention. Do not clamp the stator in a vice or hit it with a hammer.
Rotor check
1. Conductivity test (between two adjacent segments).
- If there is no continuity, replace the rotor assembly.
2. Insulation check (between the commutator terminals and the shaft).
- If there is continuity, replace the rotor assembly.
3. Check the surface of the switch.
- If the surface is rough, lightly sand it with sandpaper No. 500-600.
