Removal
Wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly
1. Remove the wheels from the vehicle.
2. Remove the wheel sensor from the steering knuckle. See chapter «Brake system».
Attention. Do not pull on the wheel sensor wiring.
3. Remove the locking plate from the stand. See chapter «Brake system».
4. Remove the mounting bolts from the caliper bracket. Hang the caliper bracket so that it does not interfere with your work. See chapter «Brake system».
Attention. Do not press the brake pedal after removing the brake caliper.
5. Remove the brake disc.
Attention:
- Before removing the brake rotor, make alignment marks on the brake rotor and on the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly.
- Don't drop the brake disc.
6. Remove the cotter pin, then loosen the hub locknut.
7. Separate the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly from the drive shaft by lightly tapping the end with a hammer and a piece of wood, then unscrew the hub locknut.
Attention:
- Do not bend the drive shaft joint to a large angle. Also, do not overextend the sliding joint.
- Do not allow the drive shaft to hang unsupported by the housing (or hinge assembly), shaft and other components.
Note. If after performing this procedure you cannot separate the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly from the drive shaft, use a suitable puller.
8. Remove the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly.
Steering knuckle
1. Remove the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly, then remove the mud shield.
2. Separate the wishbone from the steering knuckle.
3. Remove the steering knuckle from the strut assembly.
4. Loosen the outer tie rod end nut.
5. Using a ball joint remover, remove the outer tie rod end (1) from the steering knuckle (2) so as not to damage the ball joint cover (3).
Attention. To avoid damaging the threads and causing the ball joint remover to come off, tighten the nut by hand.
6. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:
Attention. If you are reusing the brake disc, align the marks made during removal.
- Perform final tightening of all components removed along with the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly and steering knuckle with the vehicle unloaded.
Check after removal
Check the components for deformation, cracks or other damage. Replace if necessary.
Checking the ball joint
Check whether the covers of the transverse arms and ball joints of the outer tie rod ends are broken, whether there is any play in the axial direction, and also check the tightening torque. See below and chapter «Steering».
Check after installation
- Check the alignment of the front wheels. See below.
- After checking the front wheel alignment, adjust the neutral position of the steering angle sensor. See chapter «Brake system».
Front drive shaft covers
Removal
1. Drive shaft; 2 Cotter pin.
On the right side (engine MR20DE) 1. Cotter pin; 2. Drive shaft; 3. Plate; 4. Support bearing bracket.
Disassembly
On the left side (engine MR20DE) 1. Ring clamp; 2. Dust cover; 3. Body; 4. Retaining ring; 5. Cross assembly; 6. Retaining ring (engine MR20DE); 7. Case clamp; 8. Case; 9. Shaft; 10. Dynamic shock absorber clamp; 11. Dynamic shock absorber; 12. Ring clamp; 13. Hinge assembly.

Replacement
Wheel side
1. Remove the wheels from the vehicle.
2. Remove the wheel sensor from the steering knuckle. See chapter «Brake system».
Attention. Do not pull on the wheel sensor wiring.
3. Remove the locking plate from the stand. See chapter «Brake system».
4. Remove the mounting bolts from the caliper bracket. Hang the caliper bracket so that it does not interfere with your work. See chapter «Brake system».
Attention. Do not press the brake pedal after removing the brake caliper.
5. Remove the brake disc.
Attention:
- Before removing the brake rotor, apply alignment marks to the brake rotors on the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly.
- Don't drop the brake disc.
6. Remove the cotter pin, then loosen the hub locknut.
7. Separate the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly from the drive shaft by lightly tapping the end with a hammer, using a block of wood, then unscrew the hub locknut.
Attention:
- Do not bend the drive shaft joint to a large angle. Also, do not overextend the sliding joint.
- Do not allow the drive shaft to hang unsupported by the housing (or hinge assembly), shaft and other components.
Note. If after performing this procedure it is not possible to separate the wheel hub from the drive shaft, use a suitable puller.
8. Separate the wishbone from the steering knuckle.
9. Loosen the outer tie rod end nut.
10. Using a ball joint remover, remove the outer tie rod end (1) from the steering knuckle (2) so as not to damage the ball joint cover (3).
Attention. To avoid damaging the threads and causing the ball joint remover to come off, tighten the nut by hand.
11. Remove the drive shaft from the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly.
12. Remove the clips from the boot, then remove the boot from the hinge assembly.
13. Screw on the drive shaft puller (A) on the thread of the hinge assembly by at least 30 mm. Support the drive shaft with one hand and remove the joint assembly from the shaft using an impact puller (IN).
Attention:
- Center the impact puller and drive shaft and remove using a firm, even force.
- If the joint assembly cannot be removed, try again after removing the drive shaft from the vehicle.
14. Remove the ring clamp (1) from the shaft (engine MR20DE).
15. Remove the cover from the shaft.
16. Wipe off any old grease from the hinge assembly with paper towels.
17. Pack genuine NISSAN lubricant or equivalent into the spline hole of the hinge assembly (1), until the spline hole and groove of the ball joint are filled to the brim.
Attention. After applying the lubricant, wipe off the old leaked lubricant with a napkin.
18. To avoid damaging the cover, wrap the splined part of the shaft (engine MR20DE) electrical tape (A). Place the new cover on the shaft and secure with clamps.
Attention. Do not reuse the case or clips.
19. Remove the electrical tape wrapped around the splined portion of the shaft.
20. Install the ring clamp (1) into the groove at the end of the shaft.
Attention. Do not reuse the ring clamp.
Note. It is recommended to install the ring clamp using a mounting tool.
21. Center the shaft and joint assembly.
- Then insert the shaft with ring clamp into the joint assembly.
22. Install the hinge assembly (1) on the shaft (engine MR20DE) using a plastic hammer.
Attention. When rotating the drive shaft, ensure that the joint assembly is properly engaged.
23. Bring the amount of lubricant to the required amount by filling the cover with it from the inside on the wide side of the cover.
Standard
Amount of lubricant. See paragraph below. «Technical data and specifications».
24. Secure the cover tightly in the grooves (marked «*»), as shown in the picture.
Attention. If on the seating surfaces of the cover (marked «*») If grease gets on the shaft or hinge assembly, the cover may come off. Remove all grease from surfaces.
25. To avoid deformation of the cover, adjust the installation length of the cover to the required value («L»), below by inserting a flat blade screwdriver or similar tool under the wide side of the boot and releasing the air from it.
Standard
Cover installation length («L»): See paragraph below. «Technical data and specifications».
Attention:
- If the installation length of the cover is different from the norm, the cover may break.
- Do not touch the tip of the screwdriver to the inside surface of the case.
26. Using a crimping tool for case clamps (A) (special tool KV40107300) secure the wide and narrow sides of the cover with new clips.
Note. Fix the clamp so that the size «M» was equal to that shown below.
Size «M»: 1.0-4.0 mm
27. Secure the hinge assembly and shaft, then make sure they are in position by rotating the boot. Otherwise, reinstall them with new boot clips.
28. Insert the drive shaft into the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly, then tighten the hub locknut by hand.
Attention. The drive shaft has a press fit. When inserting the shaft, do not push on it, but pull on it by tightening the hub locknut until it is completely seated.
29. Install the wishbone to the steering knuckle. See chapter «Steering».
30. Install the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle. See chapter «Steering».
31. Install the brake disc.
Attention. If you are reusing the brake disc, align the marks made during removal.
32. Install the caliper bracket onto the steering knuckle. See chapter «Brake system».
33. Install the strut lock plate. See chapter «Brake system».
34. Install the wheel sensor on the steering knuckle. See chapter «Brake system».
35. Tighten the hub locknut to the required torque.
36. Install the cotter pin.
Attention:
- Do not reuse the cotter pin.
- To avoid play, tighten the cotter pin sufficiently at the base.
37. Install the wheels on the car.
Front drive shafts (engine MR20DE)
Removal from the left side 1. Drive shaft; 2. Cotter pin.

Removal
On the left side
1. Follow steps 1-11. «Replacement» higher.
2. Remove the drive shaft from the transmission assembly.
- Remove using the attachment (A) to the drive shaft (special tool: KV40107500) and impact puller (IN) inserting the tip of the attachment between the housing and the gearbox.
Attention. Do not bend the drive shaft joint to a large angle when removing the drive shaft. Also, do not overextend the sliding joint.
On the right side
1. Follow steps 1-11. «Replacement» higher.
2. Unscrew the plate bolts and remove the plate.
3. If necessary, unscrew the support bearing bracket mounting bolts and remove the bracket.
4. Remove the drive shaft from the transmission assembly.
- Remove using the attachment to the drive shaft (special tool. KV40107500) and an impact puller by inserting the tip of the attachment between the housing and the gearbox.
Attention. Do not bend the drive shaft joint to a large angle when removing the drive shaft. Also, do not overextend the sliding joint.
Installation
On the left side
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:
- To avoid damaging the oil seal when installing the drive shaft, install protection (A) (special tools; KV381079000) to the gearbox.
- Insert the sliding joint into the water shaft and install securely by tapping with a hammer.
Attention. Make sure the ring clamp is fully engaged.
On the right side
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:
- To avoid damaging the oil seal when installing the drive shaft, install protection (A) (special tool KV381079000) to the gearbox.
- Insert the drive shaft sliding joint and tap it securely with a hammer.
- When installing the support bearing bracket (1):
Tighten the mounting bolts by hand in order (A), (IN).
Place the plate (2) so that the cutout (WITH) ended up on top. Tighten the mounting bolts by hand in order (A) (b).
Attention. Do not reuse the plate.
Disassembly
Transmission side
1. Secure the shaft in a vice.
Attention. When securing the shaft in a vice, protect it from damage by laying aluminum or copper strips.
2. Remove the clips from the case, then remove the case from the body.
3. Remove the retaining ring.
4. Apply alignment marks to the housing and shaft, then remove the housing from the shaft.
Attention. Apply marks with paint or similar substance. Do not scratch surfaces.
5. Apply registration marks (A) onto the cross assembly and shaft.
Attention. Apply marks with paint or similar substance. Do not scratch surfaces.
6. Remove the retaining ring (1), then remove the spider assembly from the shaft.
7. Remove the cover from the shaft.
8. Remove the ring clamp from the shaft (on the left side).
9. Remove the dust cover from the housing.
10. Remove old grease from the housing with paper towels.
Support bearing
1. Remove the dust cover from the housing.
2. Remove the retaining ring.
3. Press the support bearing out of the housing.
4. Remove the dust cover.
Dynamic shock absorber
Remove the clamps, then remove the dynamic shock absorber from the shaft.
Wheel side
1. Secure the shaft in a vice.
Attention. When securing the shaft in a vice, protect it from damage by laying aluminum or copper strips.
2. Remove the clips from the boot, then remove the boot from the hinge assembly.
3. Screw on the drive shaft puller (A) on the threads of the joint assembly by at least 30 mm and remove the joint assembly from the shaft using an impact puller (IN).
Attention:
- If the hinge assembly cannot be removed even after 5 attempts, replace the shaft and hinge assembly as a set.
- Center the impact puller and the drive shaft and remove using force at a right angle.
4. Remove the ring clamp from the shaft.
5. Remove the cover from the shaft.
6. Remove old grease from the hinge assembly with paper towels while rotating the cage.
Assembly
Transmission side
1. To avoid damaging the cover, wrap the splined part of the shaft with electrical tape (A). Place the new cover on the shaft and secure with clamps.
Attention. Do not reuse the case or clips.
2. Remove the electrical tape wrapped around the splined portion of the shaft.
3. Align the marks (A) applied to the shaft (2) when removing the cross (1). Install the cross assembly with the splined part (IN) towards the drive shaft.
4. Secure the spider assembly to the shaft with a retaining ring (1).
Attention. Do not reuse the retaining ring.
5. Apply the required amount of lubricant to the spider assembly and sliding surface.
6. Install the housing onto the cross assembly and add lubricant to the amount specified below.
Standard.
Lubricant quantity: See paragraph below. «Technical data and specifications».
7. Align the alignment marks made when removing the housing.
8. Install the retaining ring.
Attention. Do not reuse the retaining ring.
9. Secure the case tightly into the grooves (marked «*»), as shown in the picture.
Attention. If on the seating surfaces of the cover (marked «*») If grease gets on the shaft or housing, the cover may come off. Remove all grease from surfaces.
10. To avoid deformation of the cover, adjust the installation length of the cover to the required value («L») indicated below by inserting a flathead screwdriver or similar tool under the cover from the wide side and releasing air from it.

- If the installation length of the cover is different from the norm, the cover may break.
- Do not touch the tip of the screwdriver to the inside surface of the case.
11. Securely secure the wide and narrow sides of the cover with new clips as shown in the illustration.
Attention. Do not reuse cover clips.
12. Secure the housing and shaft, then make sure that they are in the required position by turning the cover. Otherwise, reinstall them with new boot clips.
13. Install the dust cover (on the left side).
Attention. Do not reuse the dust cover.
14. Install the ring clamp onto the body (on the left side).
Attention. Do not reuse the ring clamp.
Support bearing
1. Install the dust cover on the housing.
Attention. Do not reuse the dust cover.
2. Press the support bearing onto the housing.
3. Install the retaining ring.
Attention. Do not reuse the retaining ring.
4. Install dust covers.
Attention. Do not reuse dust covers.
Dynamic shock absorber
If the dynamic shock absorber is removed, secure it with new clamps as shown in the illustration, so that the dimensions are as shown below.
Attention. Do not reuse the cover clips.
Standard.

Wheel side
Perform assembly following the steps in paragraph. «Replacing the drive shaft boot» higher.
Check after removal
- Move the hinge up/down left/right and axially. Make sure the movement is smooth and there is no significant play.
- Check for cracks or damage on the covers and for lubricant leaks.
- If there are any abnormalities, remove the drive shaft and replace the faulty components.
