Pic. 7.14. Assembling the speedometer housing and drive
1. Open the hood, disconnect the speedometer drive cable from the transmission. See Section 12.
2. If required, the speedometer gear assembly can be removed separately. Unscrew the fastening screw and pull the assembly up from the casing.
3. To remove the speedometer housing, unscrew it and remove it from the transmission, noting the O-ring and thrust washers. Remove the speedometer mechanism assembly by marking the two thrust washers at each end of the assembly. Cover the hole with a clean rag to limit fluid loss.
4. If the speedometer drive or gears are damaged, they can be replaced separately by knocking out the roll pin that secures them to the shaft. Likewise, the gear assembly can be removed. knocking out the cylindrical pin. Note the number of shims installed on the gear.
5. Always replace O-rings and seals.
6. Installation is carried out in reverse order. Lubricate the O-rings when installing and check that the gear teeth engage properly. Tighten the bolts and screw to the specified torque. Check the fluid level, add if necessary (see Chapter 3 of this Section).
