Note: When the water pump fails, refrigerant leaks from the right end of the pump. A defective pump cannot be repaired. In the event of a breakdown, the pump must be replaced.

1. Drain the coolant from the cooling system as described in Chapter 3, then disconnect the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing cover.
2. Remove the timing belt and tension mechanism assembly.
3. Remove the bolt from the pump, noting the location of the spring washers and power steering pump adjuster hanger. Remove the pump gaskets.
4. As noted above, the pump must be replaced if there is any malfunction.
5. When installing, thoroughly clean the surfaces of the pump and cylinder block, install a new gasket and pump. Tighten the bolts evenly to the torque specified in Specifications.
6. Install the timing belt.
7. Connect the hose to the thermostat housing and fill the cooling system.
