Note: Removal of the rear hub and bearings requires removal of the brake drum or rotor. See relevant Chapters Section 9 for complete information regarding the removal and installation of various brake system components.
1. Apply the handbrake, engage 1st or 3rd gear (manual transmission) or "R" (automatic transmission).
2. Loosen the wheel nuts. Block the front wheels and raise the rear of the car with a jack.
3. Remove the wheel, release the handbrake.
4. The procedure now differs slightly depending on the type of rear brake.
Drum brake - removal
5. Remove the pin and locking ring.
6. Unscrew the hub bearing nut and remove the bearing washer.
7. Pull the drum towards you, then push it back enough so that the inner race of the outer bearing can be reached (photo). Mark the inner ring so that it can be installed correctly in place.
13.7. Removing the rear wheel outer bearing inner race
8. Remove the drum from the axle and use a clean, dry cloth to remove all dust from the inside.
9. If the drum is clamped on the brake shoes, check that the handbrake is fully released, then remove the rubber plug from the drum brake shield and use a screwdriver to turn the gear nut so that the retractions of the automatic slack adjuster post to the drum can be removed.
Disc brakes - removal
10. Disconnect the handbrake cable from the caliper, release the flexible pipe of the brake system high pressure line from the suspension strut. Remove the two bolts securing the caliper mounting hanger to the steering axle connecting plate, and remove the caliper assembly.
11. Remove the grease cap. Remove the pin and locking ring.
12. Unscrew the wheel bearing nut and remove the bearing washer.
13. Pull the drum towards you, then push it back enough so that the inner race of the outer bearing can be reached (photo). Mark the inner ring so that it can be installed correctly in place.
14. Remove the disc from the axle and remove dust with a clean, dry cloth.
All models - check
15. Remove the grease seal from the brake drum or disc and remove the inner bearing race. Don't confuse the inner rings.
16. Completely clean all components and replace worn ones.
17. Check the surfaces of the brake drum or disc.
18. Check the bearing support rollers. Replace the bearings if there is any damage or wear. Bearing outer races can be removed using a hammer and a soft metal drift (Pic. 10.20). New outer rings can be inserted into the drum or disc.

Pic. 10.21. Rear Wheel Bearing Seal InstallationThe protrusion S should be 0-0.5 mm
19. If the wheel stands need to be replaced, they can be removed and installed with a press. Be careful not to damage the drum or disc.
20. Before assembly, generously lubricate both inner rings of the bearing, install the inner ring into the hub and, using a hammer and a block, drive the new seal into the seat with grease. Lightly lubricate the seal lips and the trunnion bearing running surfaces.
Drum brake installation
21. First measure the outer diameter of the brake shoe at the 3-9 o'clock line, turn the adjuster gear nut until the measurement is 0.35-0.55mm less than the inner diameter of the drum.
22. Install the brake drum onto the steering axle. Install the inner bearing race, having previously lubricated era. Lubricate the bearing washer on one side and install it with the greased side facing the bearing, install the wheel bearing nut (photo).
13.22A. Lubricate the bearing washer on the side facing the bearing
13.22V. Install the nut and adjust the bearings
23. Adjust the rear hub bearings. Fill the cap halfway with grease before installation.
24. Using the handbrake, set the correct gap between the brake shoe and the drum with the automatic gap adjuster.
Disc brake - installation
25. Install the brake disc on the steering axle. Lubricate the inner bearing race and install it. Lubricate the bearing washer on one side and install it with the greased side facing the bearing, install the hub bearing nut.
26. Adjust the rear hub bearings. Fill the cap halfway with grease before installation.
27. Install the brake caliper, connect the handbrake cable, attach the flexible pipe of the high pressure brake system to the suspension strut (photo) - see Section 9.
13.27. Secure the flexible brake hose to the suspension with a spring clip
