1. Remove the steering gear.
2. Remove the tie rod, internal ball joint assemblies, and rubber protective covers. Label the left and right components to ensure they are not mixed up when reinstalling.
3. Unscrew the steering shock absorber.
4. Loosen the locknut, unscrew the adjuster, remove the gaskets, spring and spring seat.
5. Set the rack to neutral position (that is, the ends on each side of the mechanism housing must be extended to the same length). Loosen the locknut and unscrew the gear nut.
6. Remove the gear assembly. Remove the oil seal.
7. Remove the rack from the mechanism casing.
8. Check the condition of the gear bearing.
9. Completely lubricate all components before assembly.
10. Assembly is carried out in reverse order.
Power Steering
Note: Repairing the power steering mechanism is a very complex operation and is not covered here. While skill and a number of special tools and other equipment are required, owners should also pay attention to the following points:
- (a) Nissan prohibits disassembly of the steering gear and recommends replacing the complete steering gear assembly, regardless of the nature of the damage,
- (b) The only available steering gear components are the various oil seals.
11. To replace the steering gear, remove it from the vehicle as described earlier, remove both rubber protective covers, steering linkage assemblies and internal ball joints. Label the left and right components. Install the new steering gear in the reverse order of removal.
