Front cable
1. From inside the car, remove the central console (if necessary) and completely loosen the cable adjustment (see Chapter 2 of this Section).
2. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on axle stands. Under the car, pull back the cable bushing from the dust cap of the lever assembly, disconnect the cable from the lever assembly.
3. Unscrew the front clamp of the rear cable from the bottom, then disconnect both rear cables from the compensator (photo).
29.3. Unscrew the rear handbrake cable clamp nuts (marked with arrows)
4. Installation is carried out in reverse order. If an old front cable is being installed, clean it completely and check the rotation of the compensator. If a new cable is being installed, carefully lubricate it.
5. Adjust the handbrake cable as described in Chapter 2 of this Section.
Rear cables - rear drum brakes
6. From inside the car, remove the center console (if necessary) and completely loosen the cable adjuster (see Chapter 2 of this Section).
7. Raise the rear of the car, remove the brake drum (see Chapter 13 of Section 10).
8. Using pliers, compress the return spring above the cable, disconnect the cable from the fork lever on the drum brake shield.
9. On early models, remove the outer cable from the drum brake shield. On later models, unscrew the cable support and remove the cable from the shield.
10. Moving forward along the cable, remove the nut or bolt securing the clamps to the bottom (photo). Finally, unscrew the front clamp and disconnect the cable from the compensator. Remove the cable from the car.
29.10. Unscrew the handbrake cable clamps from the bottom
11. When installing, lubricate the front end of the cable and install it on the compensator, then insert the cable into the clamp and tighten the nuts. Route the cable along the bottom so that it does not touch the exhaust system and rear suspension. Tighten the bolt or nut securely.
12. On early models, apply a thin layer of lubricant to the outer cable and insert it into the shield. On later models, install the cable support to the shield and tighten the bolts securely.
13. Install the return spring on the cable, connect the cable to the fork lever.
14. Install the brake drum as described in Chapter 13 from Section 10, and adjust the wheel bearings as described in Chapter 12 of Section 10. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
15. Adjust the handbrake cable as described in Chapter 2 of this Section.
Rear cables - rear disc brakes
16. From inside the car, remove the center console (if necessary) and completely loosen the cable adjustment (see Chapter 2 of this Section).
17. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on axle stands.
18. Unscrew the cable from the brake caliper, disconnect the end of the cable from the lever. Remove the spring clip and release the cable from the fastening.
19. Remove and install the cable as described in steps 10 and 11 above.
20. Note that the cable mounts are marked with the letters 'L' or 'R' to indicate the caliper to which they are to be fitted. Install the fasteners and secure the cable with a spring clip (photo).
29.20. Handbrake cable holder showing locating pin and cable spring clip (arrows)
21. Connect the end of the cable to the lever, then attach the cable to the caliper body so that the locating pin fits into the notch in the caliper body. Install and tighten the spacer bolt securely.
22. Lower the vehicle to the ground, then check the handbrake cable adjustment as described in Chapter 2 of this Section.
