Backlash check
1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead position. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel slightly left and right until the front wheels begin to move. Measure the steering wheel play at the outer edge of the steering wheel.
- Standard steering wheel play: 0-35mm
2. If the play is abnormal, check if the following components are installed correctly: steering assembly, front suspension and steering column.
Check the vertical, horizontal or axial play of the steering wheel.
- Steering wheel axial play: 0 mm
Tightening check
Raise the vehicle and check if the steering gear mounting bolts are loose.
: 73-97 N-m (7.4-9.9 kg m)
Steering torque check
1. Stop the vehicle on a dry, level road and apply the parking brake.
2. Start the engine and wait for the power steering fluid to warm up. Using a preload gauge (special tool) Check steering wheel torque.
- Turning moment: less than 706 N-cm (72.0 kg-cm)
3. If the torque is different from the specified, check the sliding force of the rack and the unloading pressure of the oil pump.
- Rail sliding force: 235.2-294.0 N (23.99-29.97 kg)
Oil pump unloading pressure:
- Models with SR20DE engine: 7.2-7.8 MPa (73-79 kg/cm2)
- Models with YD25DDTi engine: 8.62-9.22 MPa (88-94 kg/cm2)
Checking the angle of rotation of the front wheels
After checking the toe-in, perform a front wheel steering angle check. Roll the car with the front wheels on the gauges for measuring the angle of rotation, the rear wheels on stands of the same height as the gauges. Check the maximum inward and outward turning angle of the left and right wheels.
Start the engine. While it is running at idle speed, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock and measure the steering angles.
- Angle on the inner turning radius: 38°
- Outside turning angle: 30°
If the angles differ from those specified, measure the rack travel.
- Rack travel: 66.0 mm
If the rack travel is not as specified, disassemble the steering gear to check the rack travel, see below.
Adjustment
The angles of rotation of the front wheels are not adjustable. If any of these are abnormal, check for wear or damage to steering gear, steering column and front suspension components. If any abnormality is found, replace the defective parts.
