- Before connecting the auxiliary battery, make sure the ignition key is turned to the "OFF" (Off).
- Turn off all lights, heater and other electrical loads.
- Take care to protect your eyes. It is best to use protective goggles.
- Make sure the booster battery is rated for the same voltage rating as your vehicle's battery.
- Two vehicles must never touch each other!
- Make sure the transmission is in neutral (RKPP) or "P" (AT).
- If the booster battery is not a maintenance-free type, remove the vent covers and cover the vents with a rag.
Connect the heavy gauge red wire from the jump start kit to the positive (+) terminals of both batteries. Connect one end of the black wire from the kit to the negative
(-) auxiliary battery terminal and the other to a properly grounded point of the vehicle being started (e.g. bolt or bracket on engine block). Make sure the wires do not touch the fan blades, drive belts or other moving parts of the engine.
Start the car, then, leaving the engine idling, turn on the heater voltmeter motor (to maximum speed) or rear window defroster to smooth out power surges that can occur when disconnecting wires (do not turn on lights, as sudden voltage peaks can cause lamps to burn out). Disconnect the wires in the reverse order of their connection.
Connect the wires for starting the car from an auxiliary source in the order indicated in the accompanying illustration by the numbers (note that the wire coming from the negative terminal of the auxiliary battery is not connected to the negative terminal of the dead battery).
