The front wheels of the car are equipped with disc brakes, the rear wheels are equipped with drum brakes (with vertical shoes). It is possible to equip all wheels with disc mechanisms. For safety reasons, the front and rear brake circuits are separate and operate independently of each other.
The hydraulic system of some models is equipped with a valve that is sensitive to vehicle loading - a pressure regulator that allows you to avoid premature blocking of the rear wheels.
The valve is installed under the bottom of the car and is connected by a tension spring to the rear axle.
Disc brake assemblies include a brake disc mounted on the wheel hub and a caliper located on the steering knuckle (front mechanisms), or on the rear axle assembly. Disc brakes do not require adjustment.
Drum mechanisms consist of a double-sided wheel cylinder, the pistons of which act on the upper ends of the brake shoes. The bottom of the shoes are fixed motionless. Adjustment of drum mechanisms is made automatically in the course of braking.
The parking brake is made in the form of a drum assembly installed in the rear of the transmission and equipped with a cable drive.
Disc brakes 4.2L EFI late models (since 1992) years of production are modified through the use of 2-piston calipers and larger diameter brake discs. However, all the following repair and maintenance procedures remain unchanged. The components of the 2-piston caliper are shown in the accompanying illustration.
