Note. The ability to adjust the settings for the ignition timing is provided only on models 1993 and 1994. issue on models since 1995 vol. the ignition advance angle cannot be adjusted, however, checking it allows you to assess the proper functioning of the ignition control system.
1. With the ignition off, connect the stroboscope according to the manufacturers instructions. On models 1993 and 1994 issue the strobe induction receiver is connected to the BB wire of the spark plug of the first cylinder. on models since 1995 vol. a special loop is provided in the wiring harness of the corresponding ignition coil for connecting the induction strobe sensor.
Note. If the design of the stroboscope does not allow it to be connected to the BB wiring loop, remove the coil of the first spark plug. Restore the original wiring connection, connect the spark plug wire between the coil and the spark plug, and connect a stroboscope to it.
2. Apply the parking brake, chock the rear wheels of the vehicle, and shift the transmission to "R" or "N".
3. Find the alignment marks on the crankshaft pulley (the pointer is fixed on the timing cover). The TDC mark on the pulley is highlighted in yellow. On models 1993 and 1994 issue the pitch of the marks on the pulley is 5°, the TDC mark is the leftmost one. Look for the 15°mark before TDC. If necessary, wipe the pulley to improve visibility.
4. Start the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature (The upper radiator hose should feel hot to the touch). Make sure the engine idle speed is set correctly (see chapter Engine management systems). Raise the rpm to 2000 rpm, then reset it back to idle.
5. Point the strobe light at the crankshaft pulley and check the ignition timing (the corresponding label will be fixed in front of the pointer).
6. On 1993 and 1994 models. issue if necessary, loosen the clamping bolt of the distributor and, by rotating the distributor housing, make the appropriate adjustment of the ignition timing. Tighten the bolt firmly and recheck.
7. On models since 1995, vol. in case of violation of the ignition timing, check the correct functioning of the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors (see chapter Engine management systems). If the sensors are in order, drive the car to a service station for diagnostics and repair of the PCM.
8. Stop the engine and disconnect the stroboscope.
