Warning! The vehicles covered in this manual are equipped with the SRS Supplemental Safety System, better known as the airbag. Before doing any work near the pillow assembly or steering column, be sure to turn off the system to avoid injury as a result of accidental operation, - disconnect the negative first, then the positive cable from the battery and wait at least two minutes before proceeding with maintenance of components located near directional g-force sensors (see chapter Onboard electrical equipment). The insulation and connectors of the SRS wiring harness are bright yellow. Do not connect any diagnostic devices to this circuit!
The materials in this Section apply only to models with manual control of the operation of the heater and air conditioner. In the event of a fan failure on models equipped with a climate control system, the car should be driven to a service station for diagnostics and refurbishment of the relevant components.
1. If the heater fan fails or malfunctions, first of all check the condition and reliability of fastening of all terminal connections of the corresponding electrical circuit. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Assess the condition of the appropriate fuse, relay, switch. It is also possible that the drive motor will fail.
2. Before proceeding to check the electric motor itself, be sure to evaluate the condition of the fuse and relay (if provided) (see chapter Onboard electrical equipment).
3. In order to provide access to the heater casing and fan assembly, remove the glove box and the lower section of the instrument panel trim (see chapter Body).
4. Turn the ignition key to the ON position and move the heater fan control switch to the off position (I). To check the health of the power supply to the electric motor, you will need a probe lamp or a voltmeter. If the voltage is supplied properly, check the condition of the motor ground circuit (on the models under consideration, the control switch and the resistor assembly are part of the ground circuit). The possibility of impeller jamming is also not excluded.
5. To check the quality of the ground, disconnect the electrical wiring from the electric motor and connect a jumper wire between the motor ground terminal and a reliable ground. Connect the positive terminals of the motor and battery with the second jumper wire. If the fan starts to rotate properly, there should be a violation of the quality of the ground, or the resistor assembly has failed. Otherwise, the motor should be replaced, or the cause of the impeller jamming should be eliminated.
6. To identify the causes of impeller jamming, remove the motor assembly (see Section Removal and installation of the electric motor of the heater fan drive).
7. In case of violation of the quality of grounding, check the condition of the resistor assembly located in the casing next to the electric motor.
8. Using an ohmmeter, check the quality of the grounding of the resistor assembly in various positions of the control switch, - in each of the positions (except OFF) conduction must take place between three of the six terminals.
9. In case of violations, an appropriate reconditioning of the switch or the wiring of the circuit leading to it should be carried out.
10. If the ground is good, check the resistor assembly for continuity between the terminals. if a break is detected, replace the resistor.
11. For a description of the procedures for checking the functioning of the fan speed selection switch, see Section Removing and installing the assembly of the control panel for the operation of the heater and air conditioner, adjusting the drive cable. In order to gain access, remove the control panel for the operation of the heater / air conditioner from "torpedo".
12. Disconnect the electrical wiring and use an ohmmeter to check the correct distribution of conductivity between the terminals of the switch connector.
13. In case of detection of violations, replace the switch.
