Procedure
1. Check the fluid and oil levels in the engine and gearbox. Adjust them if necessary.
2. Warm up the oil in the engine and transmission, driving for approximately 10 minutes. ATF operating temperature - 50-80°C.
3. Apply the parking brake and chock the wheels.
4. Attach an accurate tachometer and position it within the driver's line of sight.
5. Start the engine, press the brake pedal and set the selector to position D.
6. Without releasing a brake pedal, slowly press an accelerator pedal against the stop.
7. Note the maximum speed and immediately release the accelerator pedal. Do not hold the throttle fully open for more than 5 seconds. The engine speed for this test is given in section «Data for adjustments and control».**
8. Move the selector to position N.
9. Cool the ATF. To do this, let the engine idle for at least 1 minute.
10. Repeat steps 5-9 with the selector in positions 2, 1 and R.
Interpretation of results
The following are possible test results as a four-letter string representing increased (H), reduced (L) and normal (N) engine speed for selector positions D, 2, 1 and R. Behind the result line are listed components that may be faulty.
N N N N - forward gear clutches, one-way 1st gear clutch.
NNN H - 1st gear and reverse gear brake, reverse gear clutch.
LLLL - torque converter clutch, engine.
H H H H - pressure control circuit (low ATF pressure), clutches for forward gears, clutches and brakes for 1st and reverse gears.
NNNN - clutches and brakes, except for the 3rd and 4th clutch, band brake and freewheel, are in order. (These components cannot be tested with this test.)
